Tiger Fishing
The lakes and rivers in Zambia is fishermen heaven. Chobe River and the Zambezi River in Zambia carry good stock of fish, and fishing can be practiced all year round. A vast variety of fish species can be found - bream, catfish, pike and the ever elusive tiger fish. Try fly-fishing during the months of May to July as the water level continues to rise during this period.
The Lower Zambezi area is known by fishermen as one of the top spots for tiger fishing in Africa. These legendary feisty fish are reputed for putting up a fight and are highly prized trophies for any novice or experienced fisherman. They have large shark-like teeth and prefer deeper water. The tiger fish is not fussy when it comes to feeding and will prey on anything that is plentiful.
Tiger fishing is readily available throughout the Chobe and Zambezi river region. The ideal time for tiger fishing is during the hotter months of September to November, as the fish tend to be more aggressive in their feeding habits in warmer water and therefore will be more likely to “bite”. The best times to fish for tiger fish are early mornings and late afternoons. The tiger fish is renowned for its’ strength and fighting performance which creates a real challenge for fishermen. A catch-and-release policy is operative, but sizable fish can be taken, so there will be no fishy stories about the big one that got away.
This is a fun pastime, but fisherman must be aware that hippo’s and crocodile share the playing field, and therefore should be cautious whilst wading in the waters. Precautions should also be taken against malaria. An insecticide spray against the tsetse fly is recommended.
The tranquility found in the wilderness, combined with the excitement of fishing is a true comfort and experience for fishermen, infusing them with a nourished spirit and soul.
