14 Day Best of Botswana (BS-UBKD)
Day 1 Windhoek

Halo! Welcome to Namibia.

An arrival transfer is from the airport to the hotel is included in your tour. If you have confirmed this transfer by providing your flight details at least 15 days prior to departure you will be met on arrival and transferred to the joining point hotel.

You can arrive at any time on day 1 as there are no activities planned until the welcome meeting tonight. Your leader will leave a note at reception telling you where and when this important meeting will take place. Your leader will also check your passport and insurance details at this meeting. After the group meeting there is the option of joining the group for dinner.

For those of you who arrive early, there is plenty to see and do in and around Windhoek. A melting pot of the many different ethnic groups that live in Namibia, Windhoek's colonial past is highly evident in the German-style architecture. Take a stroll around the town visiting many of its museums or perhaps do a township tour.

Days 2-3 Damaraland

Departing Windhoek we get off the beaten track and head into the heart of Damaraland staying in a lodge on the outskirts of Khorixas (430 km, approx 7-8 hours).

Damaraland is a region of contrasts. Home to Namibia's highest peak, ancient rock paintings, welwitchia plants and petrified forests, the whole area is a photographer's dream.

We spend the days in search of the elusive desert elephants and other desert dwelling wildlife before travelling to the Skeleton Coast National Park (400 km, approx 7-8 hours).

The coastline is named for the bleached whale and seal bones which covered the shores when the whaling industry was still active, along with the skeletal shipwrecks that are scattered along the beaches as a result of the treacherous rocky waters. Nowadays the national park is home to some of the largest seal colonies on the west coast of the African continent along with hundreds of bird species.

Days 4-5 Etosha National Park

Leaving after breakfast we travel to Etosha National Park (400 km, approx 7-8 hours) arriving in time for an afternoon game drive.

One of the world's pre-eminent wildlife areas, Etosha National Park is home to all the big carnivores, as well as five rare or endangered species: black rhino, Hartmann's mountain zebra, black faced impala, roan antelope and the tiny Damara dik dik. Game viewing in the park is relatively easy due to the man made water holes and sparse vegetation. Namibia has protected its game reserves against poaching and consequently there are large herds of elephants, antelopes and other herbivores here.

The following day we have full days of game spotting, before returning to our lodge outside the park and finishing up the day with a swim in the lodge pool.

Day 6 Rundu

Today we head further north to the town of Rundu (580 km, 7-8 hours) where we spend the night relaxing at our riverside lodge.

Rundu is the capital of the Kavango region of Namibia and is on the border of Angola. It has one of the biggest and most colourful markets in Southern Africa and is a great place to explore.

Tonight we have an option to take a sunset cruise along the Kavango River before dinner.

Days 7-8 Okavango Delta

After an early start we cross the border entering Botswana by mid morning. We travel to Sepupa (320 km, approx 5-6 hours) where we board speedboats that will take us to our houseboat that we will spend the next two nights on.

Okavango Delta is formed by the Okavango River which fans out into an intricate maze of streams, creating 16,000 sq km of wetlands. A constant water source near the Kalahari Desert, the Okavango Delta attracts a variety of wildlife including hippos, crocodiles, elephants and big cats. The wildlife can be difficult to spot however, and the prime attraction of a visit to the Delta is exploring the meandering clear waterways, green islands and lush plains of one of the world's most fascinating ecosystems.

After breakfast the following morning, we head into the delta by mokoro, a local canoe, followed by a game walk (around 2-3 hours in duration), before returning by mokoro to our houseboat for lunch.

There is time this afternoon for an optional scenic flight over the Delta or perhaps to visit a local village before we head off on another cruise.

Our houseboat has twin share rooms and a dining area on board the deck.

Important Note

On occasions our houseboat will not be available due to regular servicing and maintenance requirements. If this occurs the program will be replaced with alternate land arrangements.

Days 9-11 Caprivi Strip

In the morning we take a water transfer back to Sepupa (approx. 2 hours). Re-boarding our vehicle we drive to Tsodilo Hills, where we take a guided walk around some of the bushman paintings with a local guide.

Crossing back into Namibia and on to the Caprivi Strip we take a river drive through Mahango Game Reserve (320 km, approx 2-4 hours) with the possibility of spotting sable and roan antelopes which the area is famous for. There are also plenty of elephants, lions, buffalo and giraffes.

The following morning we visit a local village where we will get the opportunity to share some cultural experiences with the friendly villagers, before returning to our hotel for a relaxing afternoon.

Driving through along the Caprivi National Park (300 km, approx. 4-5 hours) we travel to our lodge on the banks of the Zambezi River, close to the town of Katimu Malilo.

Day 12 Chobe National Park

Crossing the border and re-entering Botswana we have a a short drive today of just 150 km (approx. 4-5 hours) before we arrive in Kasane on the edge of Chobe National Park.

Botswana's first National Park, Chobe is perhaps best known for its high concentration of elephants, which can often be seen swimming in the Chobe River. The river also attracts wallowing hippos, a variety of birdlife, crocodiles sunning themselves by the water's edge, and cheetahs and lions which come down to drink.

After settling in to our lodge, we embark on a sunset cruise along the Chobe River. We should spot plenty of birdlife, hippos, crocodiles and of course elephants.

Days 13-14 Victoria Falls

This morning you have the option to either sleep in or rise early and head off in an open vehicle game drive into the national park.

From Chobe we travel a short distance to Victoria Falls (100 km, approx. 3-4 hours). Crossing the border we enter Zimbabwe mid morning in time to have lunch on the banks of the Zambezi.

In the afternoon we visit to the magnificent Victoria Falls. The falls are an enormous curtain of water, about a mile wide, falling 108 m into a narrow chasm below. In the wet season, the spray created can rise up an incredible 400 m and the falls are an impressive raging torrent. The spray from the falls can sometimes be seen from kilometres away. It's no wonder the local name Mosi oa Tunya, means the "smoke that thunders". In the dry season, the view of the falls is unobstructed by spray and it's possible to see little islets in the river below.

Tonight we will share a final night dinner together. You are free to depart any time on day 14 as there are no activities planned; check out time is 10am.
