Lower Zambezi / general information
The Lower Zambezi Valley is surrounded by National Parks full of birds and wildlife. This remote section of the Zambezi, opposite Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe, is sprinkled with reed islands harboring many animals. The lower Zambezi River is essentially the stretch that runs downstream from Kariba Gorge to the Mozambican border. This section is particularly well known for Mana Pools National Park, the World Heritage Site on the Zimbabwean bank. The valley is characterised by riverine forests, broad flood plain and woodlands in the hills towards and beyond the escarpment provides excellent habitats and the birding is spectacular year round. The Lower Zambezi area has a wide range of activities for tourists to choose from. Wildlife safaris include game drives by vehicle and by boat. The Zambezi River is full of crocodiles and hippos and the animals seem to take less notice of you when in a boat. This allows you some close up experiences with elephant, buffalo, waterbuck and other antelopes.Keen fishermen can expect to catch some big tiger fish, while bird watchers will be delighted at the frequent eerie cry of the African Fish Eagle which epitomises the wilds of Africa. The Lower Zambezi area is best tackled via a canoe safari. Local Zambian villagers are poor yet very friendly people who make a meager subsistence living on the banks of the river from catching fish and growing a few crops. The Lower Zambezi Valley is renowned for its natural beauty. The undulating country is dotted with ebony groves, acacia and fig trees, and rich grasslands. A Lower Zambezi safari offers superb dry season game viewing when huge concentrations of animals migrate to the permanent waters of the mighty Zambezi River. The Lower Zambezi National Park, downstream from Lake Kariba, is Zambia’s newest park. The park lies opposite the famous Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe, so the whole area on both sides of the river is a massive wildlife sanctuary. Some accommodation in Lower Zambezi
