Songwe Villages’ stunning 2 320 square kilometer private property is located 112km above the Zambezi’s Batoka gorge. Victoria Falls is a mere 11 km away and the property adjoins the national park and world heritage sites.
Accommodation at Songwe Village consists of:
The 8 thatched huts are constructed in the traditional circular African style and each has been named after past chiefs of the Mukini people. The huts are spacious with traditional furniture, and have a toilet and a hand basin. Guests can not be blamed for spending hours having a shower or bath as the 3 shared bathrooms are beautiful, and have the most spectacular views of the Batoka gorge and Zambezi River. In fact, the bathrooms are currently rated as the best in Africa by a Saturday Star Travel editor.
Songwe Village is operated by a generator in the daytime, but it is switched off at night. Guests have battery charged lamps on either side of the bed. Sleeping accommodation is available for 16 people and the rooms all have large queen size beds with draping mosquito nets. Extra blankets for the colder nights are kept in a traditional African trunk.
Dishes is prepared over an open fire in traditional pots and served in a dining / common room area. During the day guests can enjoy the spectacular views from this area and during the evening they can have a relaxing after-dinner drink and chat by the fireplace. The friendly and attentive staff are keen to enlighten guests about their lifestyle and customs and to demonstrate traditional African village singing and dancing.
Songwe Village offers various experiences to their guests. For those with an adventurous nature, there is white water rafting, bungee jumping or a helicopter flight over the Victoria Falls. A tour to the town of Livingstone with its markets, museums and history, is a worthwhile excursion. More relaxing options may be to take a walk along the gorge with its breathtaking scenery, or pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the banks of the Zambezi River. A trip to Africa is not complete without learning about the rich cultural heritage of the people. At the nearby Mukuni Village, visitors will encounter traditional skills still being carried out, such as wood carving and grain pounding.
Songwe Village will instill a deep cultural and traditional experience to the visitor and awaken their spirit, mind and soul to true Africa living.
