About Kwando River
browse (1 / 3)

The Kwando River has its origin in central Angola; it flows southeast, forming part of the boundary between Angola and Zambia. The river continues east along the northeastern border of Botswana and empties into the Zambezi River just above Victoria Falls. Its total length is about 731 km. Boat cruises along the Kwando River provide excellent opportunities for birding

The Kwando River also forms the border between east and west Caprivi, 100 km west of Katima Mulilo. It also forms the border of both the Bwabwata and Mudumu National Parks. The Bwabwata National Park (formerly Caprivi Game Reserve) is an unspoilt wilderness stretching from the Kwando in the east to the Okavango in the west. Mudumu National Park lies east of the Kwando where it borders on Botswana, and further south and west is Mamili National Park. The wide range of habitats along the Kwando allows a variety of birding opportunities, with over 400 species recorded. A minimum of 2 days should be spent in this area in order get a full experience of the area.

Game viewing can be exceptional, with huge herds of elephant present, particularly during the dry season of June through to November. A 4x4 vehicle is a pre-requisite if you are planning to travel south of the B8 towards Horseshoe Lagoon. The mighty Victoria Falls is one of the natural wonders of the world and whether you choose to white water raft, absorb the culture of an authentic African village experience, take a sunset cruise or even play golf, there is a tremendous range of activities in and around the area.

Other activities include prolific bird and game viewing opportunities, canoe trail, micro-lights, helicopter flights, abseiling and bungee jumping. Visitors to the area can stay in excellent accommodation scattered along the banks of the river. Tourists can also head for the Okavango Delta in Botswana and stay at Lagoon Camp on the banks of the Kwando River.
